Why does the District perform hydrant flushing?

Hydrant flushing is the quick release of water from fire hydrants. It is a controlled procedure that is vital to the general maintenance of the District’s water distribution system. The process ensures adequate water flow is available to fire fighters, residents and businesses. It also improves water quality by clearing iron and other mineral deposits from the watermains.

Why is my water rust/tea-colored from the hydrant flushing? Is the water safe?

Sometimes hydrant flushing can make the water temporarily appear rust-colored because the iron and other mineral deposits in the water mains get stirred up. Although you may experience this water discoloration, the water is safe for consumption. There may not be a noticeable difference in your water supply, but a few could experience lower water pressure or water discoloration which may stain laundry. Wait to do laundry until flushing has subsided, then run cold tap water until the water runs clear. If clothing staining happens, keep clothes wet and treat with stain remover. If you continue to experience discoloration after flushing your lines for a reasonable amount of time, please contact our office at 614-864-0740.

Why is my water discolored, but my neighbor didn’t notice any discoloration?

If the water inside a home or business is turned on while hydrant flushing is active, discolored water may enter your plumbing. If a neighbor did not use water during the day, they most likely will not notice any discoloration.

While you are out and about, for their safety and yours, please slow down if you happen to drive past our staff flushing hydrants.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this process.
